A Guide for Finding Hope in the Landscape of Loss

A trauma psychologist explores the inner workings of her own grief―and leaves an invaluable guide for those seeking hope in the aftermath of loss.

As a therapist, Dr. Sherry Walling knew all the “right” things to say to help people through grief. But when she lost her father to cancer and her brother to suicide within six months of each other, she had the unfortunate chance to encounter two types of mourning up close―the slowly unfolding terminal illness and the sudden and stigmatized death by suicide. She realized we’re getting grief all wrong.

Written with honesty, gentle humor, and deep understanding, this book was created to bring comfort to friends and family when there are few helpful words to say.

Dr. Walling shares moving personal stories while offering a broad range of healing strategies and exercises derived from neuroscience―like how to heal through movement, how to cry in public, and how to talk to kids about death. Whether your loss is recent and sharp or old and familiar, Dr. Walling delivers wise and tender guidance to help you carry the weight of grief while finding your own path forward.

  • Sherry magically brings life to the process of grief!

I felt my heart being torn apart and put back together as Sherry somehow brought life to death. She opened a new context for my own grief at the vast loss I’ve experienced already and somehow, in opening herself to the world, held the space for me to process it in a way that left me reconnected to this wonderful life I have today.

  • You're not alone in your grief

Heard about this book on the Big Leap podcast. The end of each chapter suggests practices to help process one's grief. It was very easy to read. I found it a realistic and gentle account about what transpired. I finished this in two days and it helped me re-set my expectations about grieving after losing my father last month through lots of challenges and family turmoil.

  • Raw, honest, vulnerable - a must read

If you are grieving anything, this is a must-read. Sherry Walling tackles (the often taboo in polite conversation) topics of grief, cancer, and suicide with raw honesty and well-placed humor that makes grief a little less lonely. Be prepared to cry and laugh and feel comforted all at once. You'll learn about grief and also learn about yourself throughout the read. I would highly recommend!
